Traditional Mediterranean

L. Barry Davidson Architects AIA, Inc. originally designed a Mediterranean Style House in 1990 for a couple with a young family in Houston, TX. Ten years later, the family, now with a house full of teenagers, approached Leslie Davidson to design an addition consisting of an enlarged second floor master suite above a spacious screened porch on the first floor. The bright new screened space with Pennsylvanian flagstone slate floor and mahogany beams extends the existing family areas by creating a flexible semi-outdoor living area for the busy family.

The new addition is on axis with a large new pool in the backyard and is a pivotal room in the house bridging the interior with the outdoors. The arched screen doors and windows on the south and east facades frame open views of the surrounding backyard greenery while allowing a cross breeze to ventilate the space. The porch is the perfect place to relax and dine, and in this warm, temperate climate it can be used most of the year. It is an ideal space to spend a summer evening – the cool breezes float in and the pesky bugs stay out.
