Southern Colonial
We were fortunate to have a large wooded lot in west Houston on which to place this historically precise Southern Colonial residence. It is appropriately sited because it is set back far from the street and it is nestled among large oak and pine trees. This home presents a stately traditional presence to this old-fashioned piece of property and neighborhood.
The owners, having grown up in the Deep South, had always dreamed of living in a plantation style home. Constructed of hand-made brick and custom cast stone, the house has a slate roof and flagstone terraces and drives. Cast stone columns, keystones, sills and fireplace surrounds punctuate the antique rose Cushawa masonry.
The plan is a traditional central hall plan with flanking wings for Library and Master, Kitchen and Laundry. The other five bedrooms are arranged around a large Billiard Room upstairs. The Family areas look into an extensive wooded back yard. There are deep full width porches at the back and front on both levels to capture the views and the breeze, for gatherings on the many comfortable days in Houston.
The interior finishes consist of wide board aged Black Walnut wood floors, custom walnut doors, granite countertops and cherry wood and walnut paneling. The Living and Dining marble fireplaces were carved in Italy especially for this house.
The design intent of these gracious, bright interiors with 12’ high ceilings was to provide an open spacious refuge for this large active family. The highly detailed and welcoming exterior façade esthetically coordinates with the warm comfortable interior spaces. The trees of this shaded site enclose the house and provide a cool quite privacy.
