Louisiana Acadian
The raised Acadian cottage, a basic vernacular prototype of South Louisiana, was the inspiration for this Houston home. The clients, both from Louisiana desired a traditional French home to recollect their heritage.
The plan evolved into a central hall with front and back porches. “Soft Red” and “Hard Tan” bricks were imported from New Orleans for the exterior walls and fireplaces. Old pine lintels above the windows and pine shutters complete the Acadian look.
The front of the house has the formal living and dining areas. Transomed doors and ten foot high ceilings give the spacious feeling of natural ventilation from the pre-air conditioning days. Specially milled old long leaf pine floors cover the entire downstairs, including the kitchen powder room and upstairs hall. The cabinetry and trim in the kitchen, breakfast and the family room is old brown cypress from Louisiana. Old pine beams in the family room structurally support he upstairs floor and enhance the rusticity of the house. The paneled woodwork above the fireplace conceals the TV and stereo equipment.
This spacious family residence on a large lot with lots of trees contributes its warm ambience to this family oriented traditional close-in neighborhood in Houston.
