Contemporary Cottage

For a lovely corner lot in a quiet neighborhood with lots of trees, these casual but professional owners desired a moderate size residence in which to raise their two boys and pursue their active hobbies.

They specifically asked for a cottage-like house without pretense or grandeur. The off-white stucco exterior is complimented by the contrasting bands of neutral color at the base and around the openings. The front porch presents a simple welcome to the street.

The interiors were designed with a minimum of decorative moldings but with the warmth of natural maple wood. The stairway goes up three stories to an attic studio for the wife’s artwork.

A two-story bay window brings east light to the Dining Room and the Playroom above. The Family room has simple contemporary maple plywood paneling to accommodate a fireplace, bookshelves and art display. The clearstory diamond windows in the Family Room add a playful touch.
